noBG — help

How to remove a background from an image

noBG is a free background remover that runs in your browser. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you cut out. In Photo and Line art mode the image never leaves your device.

Five steps

  1. Open the image. Drag it onto the window, click Browse…, or paste it from the clipboard.
  2. Pick a mode. Photo for photographs, Line art for drawings and scans, HQ when the subject has hair, fur or fine edges.
  3. Check the cut-out. Drag the slider across the preview to compare the result with the original.
  4. Choose a background. Transparent, a flat colour, or upload your own image to sit behind the subject.
  5. Download. PNG, JPEG, WEBP, AVIF or BMP, saved as filename-nobg.

Which mode to use

Photo runs a segmentation model on your own machine. It is the fastest option and nothing is uploaded. It handles people, products and animals well, and loses some detail on wispy hair.

Line art estimates the paper colour behind a drawing and keys it out, so a pencil sketch or an inked page becomes a transparent PNG with the strokes intact.

HQ sends the image to a stronger matting model. Use it for portraits, hair, fur, foliage and anything with a soft or fringed edge. It takes a few seconds rather than under one.

Getting a transparent PNG

Leave the background on the checkerboard swatch and export as PNG, WEBP or AVIF — those three store an alpha channel. JPEG and BMP cannot, so they are flattened onto white, or onto whatever background you picked.

Replacing the background

Pick one of the grey swatches for a flat colour, or press + to upload any image as the new background. It is scaled to cover the frame, so a photo, a gradient or a studio backdrop all drop straight in.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no credit card, no watermark. If you want to support it, there is a Ko-fi.

Are my images uploaded?

Not in Photo or Line art mode — those run entirely in the browser. HQ mode is the exception, because the stronger model runs on a server; those images are not kept afterwards.

Does it work offline?

Photo and Line art work offline once the page and model are cached, and the Windows build ships with the model inside it.

What formats can I open?

PNG, JPEG, JFIF, WEBP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO and SVG.
